Nvidia's $279B Supply Surge Meets Korea's Chip Rally: What the Actual Q2 Print Means for Samsung and SK Hynix
Nvidia's $279B Supply Surge Meets Korea's Chip Rally: What the Actual Q2 Print Means for Samsung and SK Hynix
Two days ago, this column asked whether Nvidia's fiscal second-quarter print would tip the competitive balance between Samsung and SK hynix any further. The results are in, and they cleared a bar that was already set high. Nvidia posted $96.2 billion in quarterly revenue, up 106% year over year, and disclosed that supply commitments -- the forward orders locked in with its component partners -- have more than doubled to $279 billion. Samsung Electronics and SK hynix opened Wednesday's Korean session sharply higher on the news, with SK hynix up as much as 5.81% intraday. But roughly 90 minutes later, the Bank of Korea delivered its second consecutive rate hike in as many months, and both stocks gave back more than half their gains by the close. Having watched a number of earnings-driven rallies collide with domestic policy surprises since the 1990s, I think the more interesting story here isn't the beat itself -- Nvidia clearing consensus was close to a foregone conclusion -- but how cleanly this one trading session separated the structural demand story from the near-term liquidity one.

- $279 billion -- Nvidia's total supply commitments, more than doubled year over year, mostly memory tied to the upcoming Vera Rubin platform (Source: 24/7 Wall St., citing company disclosures, Aug 26, 2026)
- 0.75 percentage points -- the narrowed US-Korea base rate gap after the Bank of Korea's back-to-back hike to 3.00% on August 27, down from 1.00 point in July (Source: Bank of Korea, Aug 27, 2026)
All figures cross-verified against at least two independent sources where possible; single-source figures are flagged inline.
1. The Print Itself: A Fifth Straight Quarter Above Expectations
Nvidia's Form 8-K, filed with the SEC on August 26, shows revenue of $96.2 billion against a Wall Street consensus of roughly $92.1 billion compiled by Visible Alpha -- a beat of about 4.5%, and 5.7% above the midpoint of the company's own May guidance. Data Center revenue, the segment that matters most for Korea's memory suppliers, came in at $89.0 billion, up 117% year over year, driven by what the company's CFO commentary described as the ramp of Blackwell Ultra infrastructure. GAAP and non-GAAP gross margins both landed at 75.0%, and diluted earnings per share reached $2.46 on a GAAP basis. CEO Jensen Huang's framing on the earnings call was pointed: "AI has reached its inflection point. It's doing useful work. Its tokens are productive and profitable. Now, compute is revenue." For Q3, the company guided to $108.0 billion, comfortably above the roughly $104 billion analysts had penciled in.
2. Inside the Data Center Number: Where Korea's Suppliers Actually Sit
The segment breakdown in Nvidia's Form 10-Q is the more useful document for readers tracking Samsung and SK hynix specifically. Hyperscale revenue -- sales to the largest cloud operators -- reached $48.7 billion, up 102% year over year. The category Nvidia labels "AI Clouds, Industrial & Enterprise" grew even faster, up 138% to $40.3 billion, reflecting what the company's commentary attributed to demand from AI-native companies, enterprises, and sovereign customers alongside hyperscalers running AI clouds. Edge Computing, the smaller segment covering PC, gaming, and automotive chips, grew a comparatively modest 27% to $7.2 billion. The relevant read for Korea's memory suppliers is that growth is broadening rather than concentrating in a single customer, which historically has correlated with steadier HBM and high-capacity DRAM order flow than a narrower, hyperscaler-only demand base would produce.
The $279 billion supply-commitment figure, reported by 24/7 Wall St. and other outlets tracking the earnings call, deserves its own scrutiny. It represents forward orders Nvidia has locked in with component suppliers -- predominantly memory -- to support the Vera Rubin platform slated for broader release. A figure that large, more than double the prior year's commitments, is best read as an indicator that Nvidia's own planning assumes sustained multi-year demand rather than a near-term peak, which is directly relevant to how much HBM and DRAM capacity Samsung and SK hynix should be planning to bring online. It is worth flagging that the specific $279 billion figure comes from earnings-call commentary and secondary reporting rather than a line item in the Form 8-K itself, so we treat it as a single-source figure pending fuller disclosure in the forthcoming 10-Q footnotes.
3. Seoul's Reaction: A Rally That Ran Into a Rate Decision
Korean markets opened Thursday's session, August 27, sharply higher on the Nvidia news. Pre-market and early trading saw Samsung Electronics rise as much as 3.25% and SK hynix as much as 5.81%, with commentary from Hankyung and Newspim attributing the move to Nvidia's above-consensus revenue growth guidance and explicit references to memory supply constraints during the earnings call. The rally, however, ran directly into the Bank of Korea's Monetary Policy Committee decision, announced the same morning, to raise the base rate a further 0.25 percentage points to 3.00% -- its second consecutive hike and the first back-to-back tightening move since the 2022-2023 cycle. By the close, Samsung's gain had narrowed to 1.72% and SK hynix's to 2.49%, according to same-day reporting from Herald Corp.
This sequencing is worth sitting with rather than skipping past. The Nvidia-driven portion of the rally reflects a structural, multi-year demand read on HBM and high-capacity DRAM. The pullback later in the session reflects a domestic, near-term liquidity variable -- a tighter policy rate that raises the cost of the margin-financed and foreign-carry-trade-driven flows that have amplified KOSPI's swings all year. Separating those two forces matters for how institutional readers should interpret any single day's price action in Samsung or SK hynix stock: a rate-driven pullback on a day of genuinely positive fundamental news is a different signal than a fundamentals-driven selloff would be.

4. What This Confirms -- and What It Doesn't -- About HBM4 Positioning
Our earlier coverage of the HBM4 rivalry ahead of this earnings report flagged that the number that would matter least was the top-line beat, and the number that would matter most was any commentary on HBM4 qualification pacing. On that count, the earnings call was directionally supportive but not definitive. Nvidia's broad-based Data Center growth and the scale of its supply commitments both point to sustained tightness in high-bandwidth memory, which supports pricing power for Samsung and SK hynix alike. What the call did not resolve is the more specific question of how Nvidia is allocating HBM4 volume between the two suppliers as Samsung's yield continues to climb -- that detail typically surfaces in supply-chain trade press over the following weeks rather than on the earnings call itself, and we would treat any single report on allocation splits with the same single-source caution applied elsewhere in this piece.
5. Market Outlook: Two Scenarios
What follows is a probabilistic read of where the current data points, not a directional prediction.
The base case, and the more probable of the two given current data: Nvidia's broadening customer base and record supply commitments confirm that AI-chip demand remains structurally undersupplied, sustaining HBM and high-capacity DRAM pricing power for both Korean suppliers into 2027. Samsung's HBM4 yield, which TrendForce reported climbing from below 60% in February to roughly 80% by August, continues converting into a larger qualified allocation, narrowing -- without closing -- the gap with SK hynix's larger overall HBM market share. The BOK's rate hike is read by markets as a well-telegraphed, preemptive move rather than a signal of underlying stress, consistent with Governor Rhee Chang-yong's framing that early action reduces the eventual cost of tightening.
The risk case worth taking seriously: Nvidia's valuation is already elevated enough -- JPMorgan has previously noted the stock traded roughly 5% lower a month after each of its prior four earnings reports despite consistently beating estimates -- that even a strong beat could trigger profit-taking across the AI supply chain, Korea included, once the initial reaction fades. Separately, the Bank of Korea's dot plot released alongside Wednesday's decision showed 16 of 21 policy-committee projections pointing to at least one further hike within six months, which would raise domestic funding costs further and could dampen the foreign and margin-financed inflows that have amplified this year's KOSPI swings in both directions.
6. Basic Investment Principles
This section is deliberately general and not a recommendation to buy, sell, or time any specific position.
- Separate the earnings-driven signal from the rate-driven signal. August 27 offered an unusually clean natural experiment in doing exactly that -- the same trading session carried both a strongly positive fundamental catalyst and a tightening domestic liquidity catalyst, and conflating the two into a single "market mood" read would miss the more useful information embedded in how the gains decayed intraday.
- Diversify across the memory value chain rather than concentrating in a single supplier. Samsung and SK hynix respond to different catalysts -- yield curves, certification timelines, and customer qualification processes -- that can move independently even within a shared demand cycle.
- Treat single-source figures, including the $279 billion supply-commitment number, as directional until they appear in a fuller SEC filing, and weight investment decisions accordingly.
- Maintain a long time horizon and avoid overweighting any single earnings print or rate decision in isolation from the broader capital-cycle trajectory.
